Dry Camping / Boondocking Instructions

For dry camping and boondocking we recommend using RV Digest-It Powder (either drop-in's or scoop-able powder). When access to water is difficult, the powder variations of RV Digest-It are the most effective for treating waste breakdown and eliminating odors.

To treat your RV holding tanks with RV Digest-It powder, follow these instructions while dry camping / boondocking.

  1. Determine Your Black Water Holding Tank Capacity
  2. Flush Your Holding Tank Thoroughly - We recommend flushing for 20 - 30 minutes.
  3. Close Your Black Water Tank Valve - Always keep your black tank valve closed, except for when dumping your tank.
  4. Before Your Trip, Pre-Charge Your Black Water Tank With 5 - 7 Gallons Of Water - Either pour through your RV toilet or hold down your toilet flush pedal for 1 minute.
  5. Fill Your RV Toilet Half Way With Water
  6. Add 1 Drop-in or 1 scoop of RV Digest-It Holding Tank Treatment To RV Toilet.

Camping In High Heat

For RVers who will be camping in high heat we recommend normal treatment with RV Digest-It (powders or liquids depending on how you are camping), coupled with The Unique Method. All bacteria based products will lose some efficiency in high heat so it is important you supplement your tank treatment with the right treatment process to keep strong smells at bay.

To treat your RV holding tank with RV Digest-It liquids or powders in hot weather, follow these instructions.

  1. Determine Your Black Water Holding Tank Capacity
  2. Flush Your Holding Tank Thoroughly - We recommend flushing your tank for 20 - 30 minutes.
  3. Close Your Black Water Tank Valve - Always keep your black tank valve closed, except when dumping your tank.
  4. Fill Your Black Water Tank With 3 - 5 Gallons Of Water - Either pour through your RV toilet or hold down your toilet flush pedal for 1 minute.
  5. Shake RV Digest-It Bottle Well.
  6. Fill Your RV Toilet Half Way With Water
  7. Pour 2 oz. (add 1 drop-in or 1 scoop-able powder) of RV Digest-It Holding Tank Treatment Into RV Toilet.
  8. Flush RV Toilet
  9. Repeat This Process Every Time You Dump Your Black Water Tank - We recommend dumping when your holding tank reads 2/3 full or after 4 - 5 days to prevent odors.

Weekend Warrior Instructions

Even if you are the occasional camper or weekend warrior, it is always good to practice good holding tank habits so your trip doesn't get ruined by tank clogs or excessive odors.

For Weekend Warriors, we recommend using RV Digest-It Holding Tank Treatment throughout your trip. Read our full hookup instructions or dry camping / boondocking instructions above depending on how you will be camping!

Black Tank Rules For Success:

  • Always Keep Your Black Tank Valve Closed
  • Use Plenty Of Water - Flush your RV toilet for 10 seconds after each use. Doing so allows for RV Digest-It to reach all of the waste inside your tank and prevents odors and clogs.
  • Dump Your Holding Tanks After Your Weekend Excursion and Flush Them Extensively (we recommend 20 - 30 minutes) - This will ensure that the next time you go out, you won't have any left over waste build-up to cause clogs or put a damper on your trip.

General Tips For Success

In general, using our products is straight forward, but there are a few things that you can be aware of that will improve your results when using RV Digest-It in your holding tanks.

Best practices for RV holding tanks:

  • Always Keep Your Black Tank Valve Closed - Except when dumping your tank.
  • Use Ample Water With Every Flush - This will hydrate the microbes and allow them to adequately break down solid waste. It will also ensure that all of the solid waste is covered with water, helping to suppress odors.
  • Always Keep Several Inches Of Water In Your Toilet To Prevent Odors From Seeping Into Your RV
  • Ideally You Should Dump Your Tanks Every 4 - 5 Days For Optimal Odor Control - If you are going to extend the time between dumps, treat every 4 days to boost microbial count.
  • Keep Tank Temperatures Below 85°F - If you believe your holding tank is exceeding 85°F, use more water with every flush and double the treatment dose.
  • Flush Your Tank Every 3 - 5 Dumps For 20 - 30 Minutes
  • Never Clean Your Toilets With Chemicals Or Bleach - Only use Scrub-It RV toilet cleaner + tank enhancer or another alternative that is safe for bacteria.
  • Always Fill Your Toilet Bowl BEFORE You Use The Toilet To Help Waste Flow Correctly Down The Line.
